We should think and seek, as we journey through university and life, how can we strengthen our character while finding out as much as possible about the unwritten laws of our society, achieving success and independence, upholding truth and responsibility, and positively contributing towards the world, all while staying grounded and connected.Īs a resource to help you stay grounded and connected, we are fortunate at Carleton to have a dedicated multi-faith team of chaplains from a wide range of communities who are ready to offer compassionate listening to our students and all members of our university community. Of course, while not everything is defined at this stage, the foundation is certainly laid to develop the characteristics that make up who we are. At this stage, one becomes fully responsible for their actions as they define their success in the process of their pursuit of what is most meaningful for them in life. University acts as one of the transformative stages towards our maturity, where now becomes a high time to make strong and independent decisions. Moreover, there are moments in our lives when our own answers change, and university is one of them. Who we are? Why are we living here? What is our mission in life? What is our place in society? The answers to these questions differ greatly from one person to another because of the different preferences, demands, and opportunities that exist. Ultimately, in life, there are some general questions that every one of us tries to solve for many years and maybe for our whole life. If we continue to think of this concert analogy, what is the greater purpose of a large symphony playing their music? The answer can be the same for why our world turns. The second is pursuing the purpose that means the most to us as an individual, as we contribute towards the universe’s symphony with our unique verse in harmony. The first of which is by constantly developing our character to have a positive and harmonious engagement with others, ourselves, and our surroundings. This can be simultaneously manifested by every one of us mainly through two concepts. ![]() ![]() ![]() Spiritual wellbeing is a process of developing a better understanding of one’s own personal beliefs and values so that we can choose actions and behaviors that are consistent with them. Essentially this means “what is your purpose?” and has tangible ripple effects into one’s psychological and motivational wellbeing, our behaviours, and ultimately influences our overall state of health. An expansion of this idea can be found in the Iceberg Model of Health and Disease, where the deepest realm in one’s state of wellness is Spirituality, Being, and Meaning. The character in the movie, Chris Gardner, is a real person and states that the “Y” in Happyness represents “You”, and what makes you happy. It can be interpreted that the way that “Happ yness” was spelled represents an unbeaten path that we shall walk along together. ![]() Many of us have seen the heartfelt movie “The Pursuit of Happ yness” starring Will Smith. ![]()
